On Thursday 30 June 2016, Hollis family members, the Mayor of Redcar & Cleveland Council Barry Hunt, members of the Green Howards Regiment, the local community and Freemasons from Guisborough gathered at St Cuthbert’s Church, Ormesby for the unveiling of a commemorative bench to Company Sergeant Major Hollis, the only man to receive the Victoria Cross for his Operation Overlord heroics serving with the 6th Battalion on Gold beach, Normandy on 6 June 1944.

Why is memory so important to Freemasons? I’m sure to many of you, that will seem obvious. Yet, beyond memorizing material so that you can do things like prove up to a higher degree, perform your ritual part well, do the floorwork, deliver a charge or even deliver a tracing board, there is a great deal more to this topic than one might think at first glance. Thus, in this brief paper, I hope to sketch out three interrelated areas in which memory may – whether consciously or inadvertently – be of significance to Freemasons.
In life, it’s good to remember our history and practice traditions. A fine example of both amply relate to Durham School, which was founded in 1414, that’s over six hundred years’ worth of history to reflect upon. Mari Street, the widow of Bro Leslie J. Street who was a member of Wayfarer Lodge No. 8679 meeting in Coalville, jumped out of a plane at 13,000 feet for a skydive in order to raise funds for the British Lung Foundation

The Royal Arch Provincial Executive of Essex have produced 2 new leaflets to enhance the understanding of the Exaltation ceremony for the Exaltee and Royal Arch Companions alike. “The Exaltation Ceremony – Setting the Scene” and “Sojourners Readings” are intended to be read at the relevant parts of the ceremony and all Royal Arch Chapters are encouraged to adopt these.
The Provincial Grand Master (in company with a great many Shropshire Masons) has been delighted to congratulate W Bro David Tudor on his recent award of an MBE for services to Charity. He received the award on 11th June from Her Majesty the Queen (our Grand Patron).
