Jersey Lodge, No. 2163 presented a cheque for £1,000 at its recent Installation Meeting to the Alzheimer’s Society in memory of W. Bro John Morrison.

Present at the meeting, held on Monday 5th November 2018 at Uxbridge Masonic Centre, were Betty Morrison, Pippa Holdup from the Alzheimer’s Society, Brethren and guests.

Betty was also presented with a Broken Column compact in a presentation case and a copy of the summons.

Pippa gave a short presentation on the aims of the society and the disturbing facts about dementia, which is a brain disorder that progressively attacks brain function.

Alzheimer’s disease is the most common form of dementia, affecting 62% of those diagnosed.

There are currently 850,000 people in the UK suffering with dementia, including one in six people over the age of 80 and 70% of people in care homes have dementia or severe memory problems.

There is currently no cure, but early diagnosis can help delay the onset and the Alzheimer’s Society states that this could save 30,000 lives a year in the UK alone.

Although it is estimated that the annual cost of caring for a person with dementia is £30,000, only £90 per person is spent on dementia research each year.

The Alzheimer’s Society is committed to spending at least £150m over the next decade on dementia research to improve care for people with the disease today and to find a cure for tomorrow.

This includes £50m to fund the UK’s first dedicated Dementia Research Institute.

The funds raised by Jersey Lodge, and the many other Masonic Lodges who support this worthy cause, will play a part in improving the health and outlook for those suffering from this most debilitating disease for the benefit of those that suffer from it and the loved ones who care for them.
