Somerset Freemasons donate £175,000 to charities and good causes
As Wells Cathedral reopens its doors, Somerset Freemasons have supported its charitable appeal with a £10,000 donation.
During its three months of closure, some 70,000 people have been unable to visit Wells Cathedral. As a result, it now faces a real financial challenge.
Crewkerne Freemasons and the Somerset Provincial Grand Lodge are sponsoring Donald Gray’s production of PPE ear protectors for NHS staff, care workers and others employed on the front line during the Covid-19 pandemic. Mr Gray who is a member of the Parrett and Axe Lodge, whose meetings are held at the Masonic Hall in South Street, is making batches of the ear protectors on a 3D printer at his home near Yeovil.
As part of the effort to combat the ill-effects of Covid-19 upon the health and welfare of the most vulnerable in the area, Bath Freemasons have launched the ‘ Square Meals ’ initiative by re-opening their kitchen to provide wholesome, pre-cooked frozen meals for delivery by Social Care staff to vulnerable citizens through the B&NES Food Parcel distribution channel.
The meals are being distributed in partnership with B&NES Social Care teams and local charities, all of whom look after the neediest in the area via local centres. These include B&NES Child Support centres in Foxhill, Keynsham and Radstock, Bath City Farm and Southside Centre who cover Whiteway and Twerton, Sporting Family Change in Midsomer Norton and Mercy in Action on the Lower Bristol Road.
