Great Scott, Charles Hits 60 Years!

Great-Scott,-Charles-Hits-60-Years!

The Royal Arch Chapter is considered the conclusion to the Degree of a Master Mason. Lodge Mentors and Proposers are encouraged to explain the benefits and meaning of “The Chapter” to brethren as part of the mentoring process.  The Province of Durham has recently unveiled a new mentoring initiative which is designed to assist Brethren in understanding the path of Freemasonry and a certain emphasis has been placed on ensuring that the Royal Arch is promoted and that everyone understands that the door to the Chapter is open to them.

If anyone is an example of how Royal Arch Masonry is a wonderful example of Freemasonry then Charles Scott is certainly that, a true and fine example of commitment and loyalty to a true and fine Degree.

Having recently reached the milestone of 89 years young, Charles has spent no less than 60 years serving Royal Arch Masonry and continues to do so. He was initiated into Freemasonry on the 24th March 1949 and after enjoying several years in the Craft which saw him become Master of Crowley Lodge in 1957 he was exalted into Liddell Royal Arch Chapter on 27th March 1956, rising through the ranks and various roles to eventually be given the highest honour of leading the Companions as ME on 28th January 1964.

Charles not only built a reputation within the Royal Arch, he also actually built buildings!

As a young man he entered the construction industry and his work took him far and wide, including Germany where he worked on numerous projects in Dusseldorf, helping to rebuild the town after the destruction caused during WWII. Charles was a member of a well known local family of Builders, set up and headed by his Father. The family business was instrumental in raising the funds for Ryton Masonic Hall, the very same building where many were gathered to share in his special evening and in which The Second Provincial Grand Principal, Gordon Brewis presented him with a Certificate honouring 60 years as a Companion of the Royal Arch.

The presentation followed a very informative talk, delivered by Bob Gibson, which explained a number of facts relating to Royal Arch Masonry and the reasons certain symbols and words are used in the ceremony of Exaltation. In replying to the receipt of his Certificate, Charles thanked Bob for taking the time to research and present such an enjoyable insight and also thanked Gordon and the attending Companions for their kind words and well wishes.

The evening benefitted from many Acting Royal Arch Chapter Officers who formed a Deputation of the Provincial Chapter of Durham, led on this occasion by Gordon Brewis. After a thoroughly engaging formal masonic meeting the Companions retired to the Festive Board to enjoy a wonderful meal and refreshments. New and old friends chatted and the high energy of the evening was clear to see with all the Companions mingling and chatting with each other about the events of the meeting and also the forthcoming meetings and various Chapter events that are happening throughout the Province of Durham. After receiving more accolades and a gift to mark the occasion Charles took his leave and thanked the Companions before leaving for home.

For those who have yet to consider joining a Royal Arch Chapter or are maybe thinking about it then all you have to do is speak to your own lodge Royal Arch Chapter Representative or head to the appropriate section on the Provincial website. Any member of “The Chapter”, especially those with such experience and knowledge, such as Charles Scott, will also be happy to assist. A new “Chapter” awaits, as they say.
