Battle of Somme commencement to be marked at Crewe Street

At 0715h on Friday, 1st July the War Memorial Friends and many others will gather at Crewe Street to mark the centenary of the start of the Battle of the Somme.

Whistles blew at 0730h in 1916 as the offensive was launched and the men went ‘over the top’. By mid-November, when the battle limped to a close, over a million men had died, making this the bloodiest battle on the Western Front – over 57,000 casualties were taken by the British in just the first day.

You are warmly invited to join us by the War Memorial at Crewe Street, and to the refreshments which follow this simple act of remembrance. All done by 0815h – just in time for work…
