As part of their recent extensive clubhouse renovations, ensuring that the facilities are not only fit for purpose for the club membership but also to provide quality facilities for use by the wider local community, Northumberland Freemasons donated £3,000 through the Richard Henry Holmes Masonic Benevolent Fund. The money has been used to purchase a public address system which was integral in the running of their recent community fireworks and Bonfire Night and is regularly used to replay films taken from activities preceding celebration events.

The 13th May 2020 was set to be a momentous occasion as the Temperantia Lodge No.4088 would meet to celebrate its centenary.

This was not to be, as the Covid-19 global pandemic did its very best to stop the Lodge from coming together for this milestone occasion. Temperantia Lodge, however, did not give in to the dreaded virus and made alternative plans to ensure that the celebration went ahead.

This is the remarkable story of a hero and Freemason, Squadron Leader Sydney (Syd) Clayton DSO, DFC and Bar, DFM. It is a story of unimaginable heroism; one of unparalleled devotion to service for his country, and ultimately, of heart-breaking tragedy. Sydney Clayton completed 145 operational sorties as a pilot and navigator (100 as a navigator and 45 as a pilot) during World War II. An average of 30 operational flights was considered to be highly impressive and Sydney Clayton was known as one of the most prolific British airmen of WW II. Following his formidable service, he joined Rectitude Lodge of Blackpool No 4122.

Symbolism of the Lodge

Sybolism Masonic

It is often said that symbolism is carried too far and this is difficult to deny when I think of Freud and other psychiatrists and psychologists who seem able to find strange and often erotic meanings in all they see. The meanings given to every image based on repetition makes the lay-person feel at a serious disadvantage when they wish to contradict anything that is given a meaning by such “Specialists.” The symbolic object, which is dredged up by the mind, seems to have no great pattern of consistency in the case of psychiatric symbol definition.
