John Paul Jones is probably the best known Naval figure of the Revolutionary War He was born John Paul (The Jones was added later in America) in Kirkeudbright Scotland on July 6, 1747. His father, also named John Paul, was a gardener and his mother was Jean MacDuff. There were seven children in his family, John was number five. His oldest brother William Paul migrated to Fredericksburg, Virginia and was an important point of contact on this side of the Atlantic.

The 39th Bournemouth Masonic Holiday culminated in a fabulous Gala evening on Friday, attended by guests of honour the PGM, R.W. Bro. Michael Wilks and his wife Kay and W. Bro. Les Hutchinson, Chief Operating Officer of the MCF. Other distinguished guests included APGM, W. Bro. Geoff Tuck, and W. Bro. Malcolm Childs; who has retired after some 21 years as our PGA. A small presentation was made to him as a token of thanks for all his work over the years.

First peek at the South West’s Tercentenary Banner – Provincial Grand Lodge of Devonshire

The Banner will be dedicated by the Provincial Grand Chaplain at the PGL meeting in April 2017. Then as part of the Tercentenary Celebrations it will complete a journey through the 8 Provinces that form the South West Region, Jersey, Guernsey and Alderney, Hampshire and the IofW, Wiltshire, Dorset, Somerset, Devonshire and Cornwall.

Walter Besant was a Freemason British writer and historian

Walter Besant was born on August 14th, 1836 in Potsmouth, Hampshire, England. He attended St. Paul’s in Southsea and Stockwell Grammar in London. He went on to King’s College London. In 1855 he was admitted to Christ’s College, Cambridge. He graduated in 1859 from Christ’s Church as a wrangler, an individual who attains first class honors in mathematics in their third year.
