Respect and remembrance
Members of Stokenchurch Lodge, No. 7438, have paid tribute to the war dead at St Peter and St Paul churchyard, in the Buckinghamshire village of Stokenchurch, by polishing the headstones of seven men and two women who fell in the World Wars.
They included Private Henry Cockerill, 27, who died 10 days after the end of the First World War. He initially joined the Royal Bucks Hussars, later serving with the Labour Corps. Flight Captain Eleanor Isabella (Susan) Slade, 40, of the Air Transport Auxiliary (ATA), died the month after D-Day. The ATA flew warplanes from factories to front-line units, as well as piloting air taxis and air ambulances.
