The Worshipful Master of Minster Lodge No. 4663, Tony Clements and his wife Pat together with Charity Steward Keith Bell were delighted to have been able to make a donation of £600.00 to Adele Coupe the Operations Manager for the charity SASH (Safe and Sound Homes) at their offices in Walmgate, York.
(The lodge donated £150 and was delighted when they received a grant amount of £450 from the Provincial Grand Charity of Yorkshire North and East Ridings.)
The money will provide funding for the purchase of a personal computer for the young people in their HYPERLINK “http://www.sash-uk.org.uk/what-we-do/supported-lodgings/” Supported Lodgings project enabling them to access their own computer when they go into to the offices to search for housing or jobs, and to write CVs.
SASH was established in 1994 as York Nightstop, offering emergency accommodation for homeless young people in the City of York. It became a charity in 1996. Since then, its work has expanded to include the whole of North Yorkshire and East Riding.
The Nightstop concept is straightforward: volunteer hosts offer overnight accommodation to young persons who have been made homeless, while SASH works with partner agencies to help them resolve their problems. This is a simple approach, but one which can change a young person’s life. Nightstop takes referrals from approved agencies, such as the Hubs in North Yorkshire, the Local Council, YMCA or the Salvation Army.
Volunteer hosts give 23,000 hours of their time every year to help young people facing homelessness. They are currently supporting approximately 18 young people in their supported lodgings helping them to gain the skills to live independently.
