Freemasons of Birnbeck Lodge raise more than £1,000 for Weston General Hospital

Weston General can now provide all patients with headphones.

Birnbeck Masons Lodge has raised more than £1,000 for Weston General Hospital, in memory of one of the group’s former members.

Long-serving Mike Braden was cared for in Weston General Hospital before he died earlier this year.

Since his death, the lodge has been looking to do something ‘worthwhile’ and has now raised £1,500, which will be spent on headphones for patients.

Ian Porter, master of the lodge, said: “One of our long-time members Mike Braden was a patient at Weston General and sadly passed away earlier this year.

“When Mike was in the hospital he experienced difficulties with his sight and became wholly dependent on the spoken word to receive any news. He became particularly fond of Sunshine Radio, the hospital’s radio network.

“Mike was well respected and highly thought of and when he passed we wanted to do something worthwhile.”

All of the funds were raised solely by the organisations’ membership.

James Rimmer, chief executive of Weston Area Health NHS Trust, which runs the hospital, said: “The donation by Birnbeck Masonic Lodge is greatly appreciated.

“When people spend time in the hospital, listening to music can be very comforting.”
