Ulverston Masonic Hall was the setting for the meeting of Lodge of Furness No 995 which celebrated the diamond jubilee of Brian Stephens who had reached the milestone of 60 years as a member of the lodge.

Brian, who was initiated on 3 September 1957, wanted no undue fuss and rather than be placed in the middle of the floor he remained seated in his usual place surrounded by his friends and colleagues.
The celebrations were led by Assistant Provincial Grand Master David Grainger who was accompanied by nine acting Provincial grand officers. David gave a brief oration detailing Brian’s personal and Masonic life.
He had been master of the lodge in 1972 and subsequently served as assistant director of ceremonies for nine years before taking over the main role for a further six years.
But it has been his work as chairman of Ulverston Masonic Hall which has provided his most enduring legacy. He held the post from 1997 until 2004 when he played a key role in facilitating the building of an extension to the hall. The previous plans for the extension had been abandoned due to cost. Under Brian’s watch they were resurrected, refined and made more affordable. As well as chairing the meetings of the hall committee he also represented the hall at council planning meetings. Those who use the hall continue to reap the benefits of the effort and time he put in to ensure the extension was built.
Following his oration, David presented Brain with a certificate from the Provincial Grand Master marking his diamond jubilee. Group chairman Peter Schofield also presented him with a 60 years lapel badge on behalf of the Furness and South Lakeland group.
