Freemasonry, under the UGLE, is one of world’s oldest secular fraternal societies, a society of men concerned with moral and spiritual values, whose members are taught its precepts by a series of ritual dramas following ancient forms in a progression of allegorical two-part plays. Freemasonry is not a secret society; its secrets are confined to its traditional modes of recognition. Like many other societies it regards some of its internal affairs as private matters for its members, according to a media announcement by Sri Lanka’s Freemasons.

The Masonic Order of Athelstan, Northumbria Province, which now covers the United Grand Lodge of England Provinces of Northumberland, Cumberland and Westmorland and the Province of West Lancashire made a delightful donation to the West Lancashire 2021 Festival in aid of the Masonic Charitable Foundation.

Last Christmas the Provincial Charity Steward, Wayne Smith, asked you to consider supporting your local communities by sponsoring a child from a disadvantaged background to attend a Pantomime during the Christmas holidays. An initial two hundred and fifty places were reserved and thanks to your magnificent response, six hundred and ninety disadvantaged Children, Parents and Carers had a special Christmas treat! The need for this further essay was first made apparent to me when—in my capacity as Secretary of the Lodge and Editor of the Transactions—I began to receive inquiries from Brethren as far away as Vancouver and Singapore, asking for materials and information which might help them to complete their own papers on Kipling, and I found, to my surprise, that while our library contains a great deal of relevant material, there has never been a paper on Kipling in our Transactions.
