Men in Sheds is a project run by Age UK Cheshire. The sheds are places where men over the age of 50 can come together to learn and share their skills and make new friends. They always guarantee a warm welcome and great banter within the shed community. Activities include wood working and turning, pen making, bespoke commissions and community projects.
The £28,990 grant to the Plot to Plate allotment project, run by Disability Direct, will pay for a new Project Co-Ordinator, who will work with volunteers to deliver the ‘Grow Your Own’ service to 350 local people. Alongside the wheelchair-accessible vegetable beds, there will be practical cooking classes, weekly gardening sessions and community open day events, all free of charge, with activities to support the environment such as making bug and bee hotels.
The grant will fund a part-time Parent Advocate role, who will work with parents for at least six months. The Advocate will provide professional, independent representation for parents, working with them to examine choices and connect with service providers. They attend meetings with or instead of their clients, which requires specialist knowledge of the legal and care system and an understanding of the emotional needs of the parents.
