Worshipful Master of Devonshire Lodge Colin Richardson hands over a cheque for £200 to Sandy Dearn Secretary of Friends of Howard Park, Glossop. The park is named after the Howard family & a lion forms part of their crest.
Friends Chairman Gerard Riley said that the Friends of Howard Park organize events and undertake projects to make improvements to the park and work closely with the local authority to ensure that the park is well maintained and an attractive amenity for the people of Glossop. Some of the achievements in recent years include, devising an orienteering route around the park for the use of local primary schools, rebuilding the island in the lake and installing 2 duck houses on it, replacing the missing gate at the main entrance to the park, attaching the missing hand on the statue on the Wood’s monument, installing a flower fountain, 4 urns and a plaque commemorating all who fell in the 1st and 2nd World Wars in the flower bed at the top of the park and instigating the painting of the railings along the front of the park, the work being carried out by the local authority.
Colin said that the park is a valuable amenity for the public and the Lodge having donated £150 last year was glad to be able to help with further funding.
The land for the creation of Howard Park was given by Lord Howard of Glossop around 1887 but the park was created by the Wood family, prominent Industrialists at that time.
