In connection with Grand Master Shawn A. Johnson’s “Committed to the Craft” theme, we asked Masons from around Ohio to share stories of leadership. Whether an experience with a fellow brother, or a standout moment they had as a leader, the stories that came back remind us why this Fraternity endures. Each story is a reminder that leadership in Masonry is lived daily, in small moments and genuine connections.
RWB Chad Kopenski – Paramuthia Lodge No. 25

Brother Jim Hall, 32º and RWB Chad Kopenski.
“Chad doesn’t have one defining story that marks him as a leader, he has many small actions that lead up to him being one of the best Masons in the state. First and foremost, he leads by caring. Where others would bully their way through a meeting, interaction, etc. He takes the time to consider what the Mason across from him or members at a meeting are going to think about his next action. He cares extensively about the Meaningful Connections he makes while traveling in the Craft. He is constantly reaching out with a thought, word of advice, or simply to ask if everything is alright. He’s a pillar in our Fraternity for Education which is essential in Masonry and he throws himself into making Masonic Education better with his works in the Royal Scofield Society, Ohio Lodge of Research, and the Midwest Conference on Masonic Education. One thing that he does especially well is take an idea that he has and dispenses it to another Brother in the Craft to use as their own. He could simply keep this idea and use it for his own, but he instead continues to pollinate the proverbial hive of Freemasonry. Lastly, when he calls to ask “how you’re doing” he doesn’t want to hear good. He’s asking because he really wants to know how life is going for you and if you need any help along the way. He is what embodies Freemasonry and I’m proud to call him my Brother.”
WB Pete Hammond – Neoacacia Lodge No. 595
Submitted by Brother Nick Bolyard
“WB Pete Hammond has exemplified exemplary leadership in Neoacacia Lodge & in the York Rite bodies. WB Hammond was a longtime Secretary for our lodge, as well as our Craft Team Captain. He also serves on the Temple Board, and has served in numerous York Rite capacities. WB Hammond is a KYCH. WB Hammond continues to mentor members in Neoacacia Lodge and in the District. He is an excellent ritualist who shares advice to others. WB Hammond exemplifies what leadership truly means.”
Brother Jeff Johnson – Harrisville 137
Submitted by Brother Eric Nystrom
“It’s been many years since I was raised as a Master Mason, and only recently restored back to Lodge. Brother Jeff Johnson has been a true Brother. Along with the rest of the Brethren, He’s made me feel welcome and has been encouraging in my return to Lodge. I want to thank him for being there! Hope I can pass on his encouragement to help another lost Brother to return to Lodge!”
Brother David Percival
Submitted by Brother Chris Duda
Sir David has helped me as a man and Mason from day 1, stepping into the role of my mentor through the 1st three degrees to become a Master Mason and now again as I go down the path of Knights Templar.
These stories remind us that no gesture is too small. A phone call, a nod of encouragement — these are the moments that bind us together and keep the Craft alive for the next generation of Masons.
