Wigan Freemasons raise £3,000 for Charity

There is no shortage of canals and paths in the Wigan area, all within striking distance of the three Masonic halls in the Borough, but the group decided to make one of its MCF 2021 Festival fundraising events a special day out and opted for a sponsored walk along the Lancaster canal.

The closure of Sure and Stedfast Lodge No 9326 was not the final act of this former Boy’s Brigade lodge at Liverpool. Renowned for their generosity of spirit across the years, the members on closure settled all bills, ensured a provision to lodge widows and contemplated where the residue would be best placed. It was agreed to make two pecuniary donations, the recipients chosen being Liverpool Masonic Hall and the Kindred Lodges Association.

Jo Davies was a well-known and popular community journalist with the Barrow-in-Furness based Evening Mail, but sadly she died in 2015 at the age of 38 years as a result of ovarian cancer. With the aim of raising funds to help the fight against gynaecological cancer, the ‘Jo’s Appeal’ charity was established a few days before her death.

Oliver was elected onto the hall committee a couple of years after it had moved from Abbey Road to its present home in Fairfield Lane. He has served on the committee throughout the intervening 55 years. Following several years as chairman he has served as president for the past 28 years until he stood down from that role at the annual general meeting in 2017.

Educational charity, Beanstalk, have been awarded a grant of £31,000 to help support children with reading difficulties across Greater Manchester and Sefton. This grant will support nearly 100 children with reading difficulties, offering them the one-to-one literacy support they need to succeed in school.

A fantastic introduction to the delights of fishing was provided by the West Lancashire branch of the Masonic Trout and Salmon Fishing Charity (MTFC), who held their first event for 2017 at the Clear Water Fisheries, Borwick, Carnforth. The event was held over two days, with members of the Help for Heroes Band of Brothers and Sisters team attending on the first day and young adults with special needs attending on the second day.

There were so many things different about the emergency chapter meeting held at Bryn Masonic Hall. Firstly, proceedings commenced at 8:30 on a Saturday morning with a hearty breakfast. The chapter was meeting miles away from its official home. The car park was full of motorcycles. Many of the companions wore their regalia over motorcycle leathers. No festive board followed the meeting, and the companions ‘got on their bikes’ and rode away. Unusual to say the least, but perfectly normal once you know the story.
