Saffron Walden Freemasons presented a cheque for £1,000 to St John’s Church in Little Walden to help with a maintenance program.

St John’s is a self-sufficient daughter church to St Mary’s in Saffron Walden but, in recent years, has undergone a three-year program of repairs and maintenance that placed a strain on finances.

Richard Peet, deputy warden at St John’s Church, said: “I knew that a lot of charitable work was carried out by the Freemasons to assist small and large organisations many of which are non-masonic causes and an approach was made to Walden Lodge.

“Word got around and, through the combined efforts of a number of lodges, the Freemasons of Saffron Walden pledged a sizeable contribution of another £900, later to rise to £1,000, which enabled work to commence on the porch.

“My sincere thanks go to all the Freemasons of Saffron Walden for assisting us in a time of need.”
