On Wednesday, 29th June, Brethren from Arenal Lodge visited El Preventorio children’s home in Real de Gandia to present another cheque for over 1600 euros to buy much needed equipment for the staff and children. Immediate Past Master WBro William Turney visited, with his successor and new Master WBro Bob Bullingham, and the Lodge Treasurer, WBro Ian Brown. The cheque was presented to the director of the home, Sra MariaJosé Castelló Morant who thanked the Brethren warmly for this cheque and for the other monies raised by the Lodge over the past two years.

The money was raised by various means, some came from a very successful quiz night, some from raffles and donations and the rest from the money raised by the Lodge’s annual Ladies night. This was held earlier in the year at Satari’s Restaurant in Moraira and was very well attended. Music was supplied by the fantastic group Duo Intermezzo and the Brethren and their guests enjoyed a fantastic night while managing to raise funds for those less fortunate than ourselves.

The money has been spent on two articles, one an electronic whiteboard for use in the classroom of the attached school and the other a freezer for use in the home’s kitchen. The whiteboard is a combination of computer and normal whiteboard which allows the teachers to draw, write and explain on a huge screen at the front of the classroom so all pupils are able to see and understand what is being explained to them. This will be a very useful addition to the classroom and hopefully will allow the children to learn even more quickly than they have done before.

The freezer will, of course, be used in the kitchen to help the cooks to store, prepare and then cook food for the children. The Brethren timed their arrival to the minute so that, upon arrival, the staff were eating breakfast and who immediately offered to share it with the new arrivals. Tea and coffee, bread, cheese ham and cakes were available though the Brethren did show remarkable restraint in not eating all of it. They were then taken on a guided tour by MariaJosé, assisted by Jorge Luengo and Marc Garcia Moratel who spoke very good English which helped enormously in explaining the function and day to day running of both home and school.

It is always a pleasure to visit the home and see how things are progressing. The visitors were very impressed with the skill and caring of all the staff and felt that although it was sad that such a facility needs to exist, the children were very lucky to be able to attend and get the benefits of so much love and affection, along with a much better education than they might otherwise have received. As always the home is in desperate need of money, clothing, food, toys and games and, above all, volunteers to help run it. If you feel able to offer a few hours a week please contact the home where you will be very welcome.
